Deoxynivalenol
(DON) and T2 toxin
Deoxynilvalenol
is also called Vomitoxin because of its strong emetic effect on
animals. It is a tricotecene produced by Fusarium fungi, as the T2
toxin and DAS. When animals reduce the feed intake, vomits disappear.
It is a strong inhibitor of feed intake and growth. It produces
abdominal pain, intestinal inflammation and acute diarrhoea. In
mature sows it causes return to heat and a high mortality in
suckling piglets.
T2
toxin is stronger than DON but less frequent. It also has emetic
effects, reduces feed intake and growth. It also produces
infertility with lesions in ovary and uterus.
Ochratoxin
A
Ochratoxin
is produced by Aspergillus and Penicilium fungi. They have strong
hepatotoxic and nefrotoxic effects, they produce a low growth rate.
At high concentrations they can produce a loss of fertility in boars
and teratogenic effects. In young boars can cause oedema. They also
can produce gastric ulcers and tail necrosis in piglets.
