Once ejaculated semen begins to undergo a series of degenerative processes which lead to loss of motility, deterioration of the acrosome and decondensation of chromatin.

Recently ejaculated sperm cells show high motility. The energy for motility is provided by the action of mitochondria found in the middle piece. Via the reactions of glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation energy is obtained from compounds such as glucose, fructose and pyruvic acid. These reactions use up the energy reserves of the sperm cell and also produce compounds such as lactic acid which may accumulate and lower the pH of the cell, leading to progressive loss of motility.

To avoid these problems ACROMAX ® contains a supply of the highest quality sugars. These are easily assimilated by sperm cells and provide for high motility at the moment of insemination. In order to control the acidification of the medium ACROMAX® contains buffers with both negatively and positively charged ionizable groups capable of maintaining the pH within the physiological range of sperm cells.
